11. Doom. The best video game series
Table of Contents
- Developer: id Software
- First game release year: 1993
- Number of main installments: 5
Doom is perfect proof that "less" and "simpler" often mean "more" and "better." We didn't like this series for its brilliantly crafted characters or engaging plot, but for the ability to shoot demons and pressing onwards. Or maybe not so ordinary after all? Doom developed and popularized the mechanics that became the foundation of countless games – with FPS combat. And it immediately did it in a style that even the first part released in 1993 plays well to this day. Few later or even contemporary titles have seen such convincing animation of shotgun shooting and loading! Besides, at every step you can see a thoughtful design here, as evidenced by the construction of stages or the behavior of enemies.
The creators of Doom have also proved years later that creating a successful remake of the classic game is as possible. And in a way that will satisfy both veterans of the original with nostalgic memories and new audiences who are just beginning their Doom adventure. In one fell swoop, we got a great contemporary shooter, as well as a journey into the world of sentimentality. It's a timeless series in every sense of the word.
To some extent, I like Doom out of sentiment. I was playing the first part when it showed up on the market. I witnessed this revolution and the rash of doom-like games. I grew up with this series and I associate it with the most carefree computer game times of my youth.
But Doom doesn't really need all that nostalgia. It was always the perfect game in its simple assumptions – with great shooting mechanics, great visuals, sound, divine soundtrack, cool atmosphere. Like the best arcade machine right at hand. That was the case back then, and the latest instalments have done nothing wrong in that regard. Doom is still Doom – one of my favorite series.
