War has never gone away. It may be just news on the TV for you, but countries of Iraq, Syria, or Yemen have been engulfed in viscous conflicts for years. Recently, the West was shocked by a new war in Europe, but even though bombs have been falling just a few miles from NATO borders, the direct, most brutal effects of war remain something we know from screens rather than daily lives. But a few years ago, Polish studio 11 bit released an extremely powerful and convincing game about the fate of civilians in a besieged city, a game even more relevant today than when it released.
In This War of Mine, we are not shooting at the enemy with an endless supply of ammunition, we are not an invincible super-soldier, but an ordinary person who lost everything to war. Hiding in the rubbles, every day we fight for survival, every sip of water and every meal, often making really difficult decisions. We often have to choose between one evil and another, helping one person, while condemning another to suffering. This War of Mine perhaps most clearly shows that "war never changes."
