Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Genre: TPP action game

Developer: Ninja Theory

Release date: August 8, 2017

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has something much more serious hidden under the guise of yet another slasher. We accompany the main character in her personal hell, which embodies the pain after losing her partner. Before our eyes, Senua descends into greater and greater madness, and with time, we lose our understanding of what's real and what's just a figment of her ill mind. The developers have consulted with specialists dealing with schizophrenia to show the symptoms of this condition as reliably as possible.

Instead of typical interface, we mostly hear voices – not some sort of narration, but rather those produced in the heroine's mind. We don't go really complete separate stages, levels, nor locations, but rather descend deeper into the heroine's madness, while witnessing a touching story about love, death, and separation. The whole thing is quite depressing and at the same time very authentic, because regardless of the Norse mythology envelope, Senua's problems could as well be portrayed in modern times.
