INFORMATION
- What game: Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
- Type of additional entertainment : a separate gameplay mode
For some reason, the Mortal Kombat games for PlayStation 2 are quite infamous. Today, they are mainly mentioned in the context of introducing new characters, who weren't able to stand the test of time, and sturdy animations. At the time, however, these fighting games did not stand out from competing titles, and received very good reviews and provided entertainment to millions of gamers. Personally, I like to occasionally return to them up to this day. Even more so, I like to go back to the twisted extra modes featured by these games.
Among all the mini-games offered by MK: Deadly Alliance, MK: Deception, and MK: Armageddon, the most notable one, featured in the Armageddon, was the Motor Kombat mode. I probably spent more time with it than with the game to which it was added. This mode is a full-fledged clone of Mario Kart, set in the Mortal Kombat universe.
As part of Motor Kombat, players can participate in races taking place on tracks heavily inspired by iconic locations from the series. Players can select from ten drivers, each one with unique skills. Sub Zero can freeze opponents, Scorpion uses harpoons, Bo’ Rai Cho vomits, etc. One can also deal with opponents by pushing them into traps or leaving them behind by taking shortcuts or using accelerators.
All of this is quite tolerably entertaining for a few minutes of solo playthrough and turns into one of the house party hits when we decide to switch to the multiplayer mode. Freezing a friend sitting next to you and listening to his or her groans as their frozen car inevitably heads towards the crusher is more satisfying than executing a traditional fatality on them.
PUZZLE KOMBAT
The second award on the list of the most interesting mini-games in Mortal Kombat goes to Puzzle Kombat, which can be found in Mortal Kombat: Deception. It is similar to Super Puzzle Fighter II - it's a variation on Tetris in which two players stack blocks, next to which their chosen avatars fight each other. If one manages to remove some of the blocks from their field, their character performs a special attack, and penalty blocks fall on the other player's screen. Or the other way around, should the opponent mount a successful attack. The warrior who manages to stay on the battlefield longer without being buried by the falling blocks wins.
