MGS 3: Snake Eater
Release Date: November 17, 2004
Action, TPP, science fiction, stealth, Cold War, TPS, 60s and 70s, PlayStation exclusive, singleplayer
The third major installment in the stealth game series developed and published by Konami and a continuation of the Metal Gear franchise, created by Hideo Kojima back in the eighties. The game takes place in 1964 on Soviet Union territory. The player becomes a special operative, code-named Snake, whose current task is to extract a Russian scientist working on a mobile, nuclear-capable launch platform.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the third installment in the most popular series of stealth action games available on PS2.
Story
The story of the game takes place in Soviet Union in the year 1964, where – as an experienced special ops operative, codename Snake, – the player must intercept a recently developed new type of weapon that can transport and launch nuclear warheads. This is only the starting point of the plot, as the game is filled with references to previous installments of the series (the developers decided to explain some of the things that bothered the fans of Snake for years).
Gameplay
For the first time in the series the action takes place not in an industrial setting but in a jungle. Snake can hiding behind trees, crawls through dense grass, dive in rivers and ponds, he can also climb trees and hang down from branches (or/and shoot the enemies from there). Additionally, the developers working for Konami have created a new close quarters combat system (gun + knife combo is very effective even when fighting several enemies at once). Moving while using the enemy as a living shield was improved as well.
Not only soldiers, but also animals are the enemies in the game. Encounters with other snakes and crocodiles aren’t pleasant, but they are unavoidable when one remains in a jungle for very long. The main protagonist will also face many traps inspired by the ones used during the Vietnam War and shown in Rambo movies (falling spikes, camouflaged holes etc.).
Technology
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for PS2 uses a completely new graphic engine (realistic recreation of natural phenomena: trees, grass, water in different, randomly changing weather conditions required plenty of hours of hard work). The game also features a climatic sound design (compatible with Dolby 5.1) and a few dozens of camouflages that makes it easier for Snake to hide in the jungle.
