Akira can definitely be called a classic of the genre. It is one of the most famous Japanese productions, especially among fans of manga and anime. The film is based on the comics by Katsuhiro Otomo. Akira is a production for mature audiences – it raises very difficult issues that may not be understandable to younger viewers. There's also ubiquitous brutality and violence here. The anime depicts the city of Neo Tokyo engulfed in a revolution and devastated by the catastrophe known as the Third World War. Every day, the city is engulfed in chaos, and with time, even religious fanatics appear, awaiting the arrival of god – the mysterious Akira...

In Tokyo, rebuilt after the Third World War, punk gangs continue to fight each other. There's also a resistance movement in the city, rebelling against totalitarian methods of the elite. Children gifted with parapsychological abilities can sense the arrival of the mysterious Akira. Contrary to previous beliefs, he is not a god, but the "outcome" of an experiment from years ago – the same experiment that the main character, Tetsuo, was also subject to. After the experiments, he wields enormous power and takes revenge on his persecutors.

Future in Akira

It's primarily a futuristic, harsh city, where riots break out and motorcycle gangs wreak havoc on the streets. There are plenty of anti-government spies here, and with time, people talk about Akira more and more – for some: it's a symbol of salvation, for others, a symbol of destruction. The film makes its message very clear: do not abuse the power that has been given to you, otherwise you will lose control of it and the whole world will suffer.
