Final Fantasy VII has become a sort of phenomenon in the Western culture. And it is surrounded by a cult-like community. This single game has made Sony a powerhouse on the console market, ripped the jRPG genre out of the niche and made it one of the most popular genres of virtual entertainment for many years. This game also has taught entire generation the love of video games. Hence, it would be a huge understatement to say that the remake of Final Fantasy VII was a highly anticipated game. Whatever its final quality, this premiere was the most important debut of our times for this genre.
The remake fortunately offered much more than just a nostalgic return to familiar places. The controversial decision to divide the project into parts and first release a title covering only a fragment of the original game in the story became completely understandable after the launch. Square Enix did not reproduce the original, but developed it on an unprecedented scale, adding huge amounts of new content, storylines, and activities. And the closer we get to the end of the story, the clearer it became that this is not even a complete remake but a completely new chapter of the story, which does not have to go the way the veterans expect it to. A chapter building something completely new on nostalgic foundations.
Final Fantasy VII Remake not only reminded about the former power of the series, but also unexpectedly caused a discussion about what remakes are and what they actually should be. Despite this unusual move the game remained a great title with a delightful visual style, atmospheric soundtrack, and engaging a completely new but pleasant combat system.
