Real RPG

The real test for the world of Diablo would be using it in a full-blown RPG. The approach to gameplay would be secondary. Someone might wish for a turn-based or arcade combat, someone else for a party-based system, isometric view, TPP or FPP. There are plenty of options and as far as I'm concerned, even a game with jRPG elements would make the cut.

Personally, however, I would probably prefer a third-person RPG, or perspective and mechanics akin to Diablo 4 betaDivine Divinity used was an extremely successful hybrid like that, so you could marry the classic Diablo with an RPG and enjoy both isometric slashing and cool world and story. Sure, there's a risk that such a hybrid wouldn't be very different from the main series, but if Blizzard has already fired the "Diablo Immoral gun" right in our faces, then a slightly repetitive, content-rich role-playing game without microtransactions would really be edible at this point.

The crucial part is that it would bring an engaging, multi-threaded story. A story that we could influence. Where we can not only beat monsters unconscious, but above all experience a great, dark and long story. Moral choices mandatory. One in which we will meet unforgettable NPCs, whose fate we would have an impact on. Where the decisions we make will not bring binary, good-or-bad results, where the screenwriters won't hesitate to put us against the wall and give us choices that will eliminate any semblence of "feel-good."

And even if – I would make sure there'd be the option of beating up everyone around and the rest of the world. After all, who said that we had to play the good hero in roleplays? Especially in a place like Sanctuary!
