Super Mario Bros. is one of the best bad movies. The cast is really impressive – we've got, among others, Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis and Dennis Hopper. I wonder what prompted these actors to take part in a project that was doomed from the start to fail spectacularly. Which it inevitably did – with a budget of $48 million, it made little under $21 million. The financial flop immediately derailed any chances of a sequel. And that's almost a shame, because this movie is so bad it's good.
The creators opted for a comic style. This is, of course, nowhere near Burton's Batman. It's simple, kitschy, and coarse. And it gets everywhere. Koopa's shimmering outfit doesn't give it any gravitas; on the contrary, it makes it hard to take it seriously, and because of the poorly written script, it's also hard to find it amusing. Dennis Hopper is doing his best, but there's just not much to work with.
The best thing about all this is CGI. For 1993 – it really isn't bad. And dinosaur-like Goombas with small heads and costumes resembling overhauled Nazi uniforms are by far the best part of the whole production. I wish other characters were designed with similar attention to detail.
