On this page of the Dread Hunger guide, you will learn the characteristics of individual meters (Health, Hunger and Heat) as well as tips on how to keep them at a proper level.
Health Meter
One of the three important status meters in Dread Hunger is the Health Meter, which determines how much damage your character can take before being knocked down. A character's health bar can decrease in two ways:
- When you are attacked by other players or AI-controlled enemies,
- After falling from a great height.
Health in Dread Hunger recovers over time, but the process is much faster when the character is fully fed and does not suffer from heat loss. To restore some health points, you can also use consumables, such as medicines.
The character's health level in Dread Hunger is also dependent on the other two meters - hunger and heat. When one of the other two metrics is completely depleted, this can kill your character.
Hunger Meter
The Hunger Meter in Dread Hunger is the second most important status that affects your ability to survive. Importantly, this meter drops much slower than the Heat Meter, but it can also lead to your character dying.
Each character starts the game fully fed, but as the game progresses, hunger slowly grows on him, which means that this meter will begin to decrease more and more. When it's completely drained, your character will starve, which will reduce the maximum health level. When the health bar is completely gray, the character will die immediately.
In this case, unfortunately, you will not be able to save yourself by taking an antidote or a medicine. The only way to restore the body to normal functioning is to eat food, even uncooked meat.
Heat Meter
The Heat Meter is the last important survival meter in Dread Hunger. During the game, you need to make sure that your character does not cool down too much as this can have grave consequences - your character may freeze to death.
When the Heat Meter is completely empty, your character will start to lose health points.
Note that each character starts the game with a full Health Meter, but as soon as you go outside, their body temperature will start to drop. The speed at which the character will lose or regain heat is related to the weather conditions, daytime/nighttime and is divided into 3 levels.
- 1st level of heat recovery: when you are near a smaller heat source such as a lantern or a stove at night or when you are on board during the day;
- 2nd level of heat recovery: when the character is near a secondary heat source during the day (lantern, stove) or when he is near multiple heat sources during the night (two bonfires);
- 3rd level of heat recovery: when you are near a dedicated heat source, such as a heater in the captain's quarters or a cauldron in a fireroom.
Turning on the heater in the captain's quarters heats the entire vessel, which facilitates heat recovery. In this case, the closer you are to the heat source, the faster your character will warm up.
When a snowstorm occurs on the last day of the game, no heat source will provide you with sufficient protection.
Here's why your character's body temperature may drop:
- 1st level of heat loss: when you are outside during the day;
- 2nd level of heat loss: when you are outside in the middle of the night;
- 3rd level of heat loss: when your character is in an extremely dangerous position - for example, they fall into icy water or a snowstorm hits.
