It's quite obvious that in The Ascent you die a lot. This raises the question of whether the game will punish you or make you face some consequences if you die many times. This page of the guide explains what happens after death in the game.
What happens when I die?
The answer is easy and short - the game doesn't punish dying players at all, nor does death have any other consequences. All progress remains as it was before you died - experience points are not reduced, the number of credits stays the same, and all items remain in the inventory. After death you will see an animation, and when the game resumes, the character will respawn at the last checkpoint. Checkpoints are very frequent, so in many situations you will not even lose progress in exploring a particular location. The only change that can be noticed after death is the number, type and location of the enemies. After you die, the enemies are re-drawn, so you can encounter someone else in the same location.
