Modifying divisions and units in Age of Wonders Planetfall Age of Wonders Planetfall guide, tips
Last update: 16 August 2019
In Age of Wonders: Planetfall, each unit can earn experience points that allow it to advance to higher levels, increasing its overall effectiveness. What's more, both regular units and heroes can be modified to make them more proficient in their specific roles and to increase their potential on the battlefield. In this chapter you will find information on how to modify your units.
Modifications - how they work and how to get them
Modifications work in a simple way - each unit has 3 sockets as standard in its equipment, in which you can install the modifications available at the moment. After selecting modifications you're interested in, the whole process will be accepted and the unit immediately gets the equipment. This allows you to instantly customize units for specific purposes.
Modifications can be obtained from three sources:
- By unlocking them through scientific research, mainly from a military tree. Unlocked modifications of this tree can be applied to all units (provided that their type does not prohibit it), and the installation of modifications will cost a sufficient amount of raw materials (energy and Cosmite).
- By buying them from NPC faction. If you have a well-developed relationship with the NPC faction, you will be able to buy rare and high-level modifications from them. When applying these modifications, you will not have to pay a fee for the raw materials.
- By completing main and side quests. For completing a large part of the tasks in the game you will receive specific modifications, which are installed for free - it will not be associated with the expense of energy and Cosmite.
Modifying ordinary units and heroes
As mentioned in the introduction, you can modify all units in the game - whether they are heroes or "regular" units. In both cases, the process looks almost identical, but it has various options and effects (different items are available for specific types of units). It looks as follows:
- Heroes - apart from modifications, heroes can also be equipped with main and side weapons. The main weapon changes the function of the unit, transforming the sniper into a melee unit. Moreover, when new types of units (tanks, walking mechs) are unlocked, it will be possible to equip heroes with this type of vehicles, completely changing hero's abilities and functions.
- Units - here you can install only regular modifications, you cannot change weapons of the units. However, after installing the modifications, you can choose whether to apply them to all other units of this type in the army. In the colonies, in the list of available production units, you will be able to immediately produce already modified units.
Note - the limit of 3 modifications per unit can be increased for heroes by unlocking the corresponding Modular Expansion skill.
Tips
Finally, a handful of tips related to this simple, yet powerful gameplay mechanics. Here we go:
- Modifying units is a great way to increase their combat capabilities. Each modification allows you to increase a specific aspect of the unit (accuracy, damage dealt, additional special ability), and a large part of them also adds +1 point to the armor or shields, which is very valuable especially during the first dozen of turns.
- Thanks to modifications you will be able to adjust any hero to your needs to a large extent. You can create an almost indestructible close combat tank or a sniper that will be able to fire at enemies from overwhelming distances and ranges.
- Modification of divisions and troops is a very expensive process. First of all, it requires high amount of Cosmite and other raw materials. So use this mechanic often, but with caution - if you lack energy and / or Cosmite, it's worth refraining from installing improvements in your divisions.
