The Flame in the Flood offers two game modes.

Campaign - story and adventure. There are two difficulty levels to chose from: "Traveler", and "Survivalist". If you chose the former, Aesop's equipment won't be lost in case of your death, and you will be able to load the game saved on one of the checkpoints. If you chose the latter, the death will be permanent, and the survival rating falters much quicker.

Endless mode - the challenge here is to survive as long as possible in different environments, without any plot.

Those are two basic gameplay settings in The Flame in the Flood. After choosing the game mode, and difficulty level, you can begin your adventure.
