This page of the Overwatch 2 guide contains brief information about all available heroes. What's more, they have been sorted into appropriate tiers, which should help in choosing a character for a specific situation.
General information
First, it is worth noting that this tier list differs from those prepared for other games. In Overwatch 2, just like in the first game, the playable characters are very well-balanced and do not differ much from each other in terms of power. This means that there is no perfect hero for a DPS, tank or support class. It all really depends on many factors, including:
- Maps and objectives: each map has a different layout that can sometimes favor ranged or close combat. In addition, the objectives on the maps differ from each other, sometimes you will have to push the robot, and other times you will have to fight for a specific point on the map.
- The opposing team: if the enemies have, for example, many low-mobility characters with a lot of health, the best choice will be a sniper like Hanzo or Widowmaker or an assassin specializing in close-range combat like Reaper. Against a different team, they could be easily countered.
- Your composition: it's worth having versatile DPS characters, not the same ones. For example, have one flanker (Tracer) that specializes in moving fast and attacking enemy from behind, and a sniper that will support your team from afar.
Tiers do not really correspond to the strength of the characters as they are well-balanced. Their main purpose is to show that some heroes are more situational and you will pick them less often, while others will be useful in many situations.
S tier (universal characters)
Here you will find characters that are versatile enough to work on most maps, helping your team achieve a specific goal and win the match.
- Ana - although she is a healer, she can also deal a lot of damage. Since she uses a sniper rifle, you can take a good and safe spot, and support your team from afar. Plus, the sleep dart and the power to disable healing for enemies are powerful tools, not to mention her power to nano-buff one ally.
- Baptiste - since support characters are now also able to heal passively, many of them will be high up on the list. Baptiste is no different. Besides solid damage, he can heal in a number of ways. He can heal an entire area by using alternate missiles and his skill. The device that prevents his team from dying is a powerful tool, as is the large field that boosts damage of any projectiles that pass through it.
- D.Va - characters classified as a tank now have to perform this role alone in the team. Due to the fact that the game has moved to 5v5, heroes in this class, if they are self-sufficient like D.Va, will be in the higher tiers. Thanks to the matrix that absorbs projectiles, as well as high mobility and the ability to kill the opposing team with one good ultimate, this heroine is one of the better choices in the game.
- Genji - this is a difficult hero to use, but once you become familiar with him, you will be able to wipe out the enemy team. He is very mobile and agile, and he deals very high damage. The opposing team will be in real trouble when he activates his ultimate ability.
- Lucio - a simple and fun to use support character who will deal with any situation. He can increase the speed of his companions and heal them over an area. What's more, mastering wall-riding will make him the perfect choice for defending a target and buying time for your team.
- Orisa - after having her many skills reworked, she has become a tank that can stun enemies from a distance, chaining them to the wall with a javelin. Moreover, she is still immune to crowd control effects, which reduces the damage she takes.
- Tracer - an iconic heroine that surpasses even Genji in mobility. She will work in any scenario, quickly killing both low-health targets and tanks, due to their size. A great player will always be able to harass the enemy team. The only drawback is the smallest amount of health points.
- Sojourn - a new heroine who specializes in medium and long range. She deals a lot of damage and, once fully charged, her laser can kill enemies in one shot.
- Sombra - since she has received a buff enabling her to hack neutral objects such as first aid kits and enemies without leaving invisibility, she has become a very dangerous character, combining high damage (but not as much as other heroes) with supporting the party by faster health packs and disabling enemy abilities.
- Zarya - her bubbles are a very dangerous tool. If the opponents start shooting at them, Zarya will get charged and have increased damage. Moreover, they protect both her ally and herself.
- Zenyatta - this character can work on any map. His ultimate ability can change the fate of the game, he deals huge damage for a support, he can also heal one character and weaken the enemy so that they lose health much faster.
A tier
The characters here do not differ in any way from the others when it comes to healing, damage or crowd control effects. The problem is that they may not always match one specific goal on the map.
- Ashe - due to her ultimate skill, she may not always work well on some maps. B.O.B. may simply not hit all enemies, because he will get stuck on a wall, or he will get into a room from which he will not have a good view of the enemies. Nevertheless, Ashe deals a lot of damage and can quickly eliminate the threat.
- Cassidy (former McCree) - after the changes regarding his grenade, he will no longer be able to stun enemies. Instead, it deals more damage and can be sticked to the enemy. Cassidy works very well on most maps, but his ultimate ability would require a surprise element and some cover. You are highlighted in red in an open space and it will be easy to kill you.
- Hanzo - if you are good at playing this character, he can be an S tier. If you miss opponents with arrows, you will be a dead weight for your team. We wholeheartedly do not recommend this hero to new players.
- Junker Queen - like some characters, she prefers fighting in closed areas. Mainly because all of her weapons deal high damage at close range. Otherwise, she could be in a higher tier.
- Mercy - this character prefers more open spaces to fly freely and be away from danger. In confined spaces, she is an easy target to kill. However, she has great healing and damage boost, and on top of that, she can resurrect one team member.
- Moira - in the open, she can have minor problems, because she needs to be close to allies and enemies to heal as effectively as possible. In addition, her orb works better in confined spaces.
- Doomfist - this hero works better in closed rooms or on maps with a large number of buildings. Mainly because he deals increased damage when he pushes the enemy back and throws them on something. Moreover, the more attacks he blocks, the more damage he will deal with his fist.
- Reinhardt - perfect for escorting or simply fighting, but not necessarily over a specific spot. Especially since his shield can't take as much damage as it used to.
- Sigma - his attack range is not very large, which can be problematic when fighting in open space. He is much better at fighting in closed areas. He can bounce his orbs off objects, adding an element of surprise to his attacks.
- Widowmaker - the more open the space and the less covers, the better it is for Widowmaker players. As a sniper, she can choose a good position to quickly kill everyone on the enemy team from a distance.
- Winston - not very good at defending one point. due to his jumps, he is more specialized in fighting against support characters. He handle any scenario perfectly only after unlocking the ulitmate ability.
- Reaper - open maps are not recommended for this character. He prefers close combat, being able to sneak up behind enemy lines undetected. He deals tremendous damage as long as the target is close to him. At a distance, he is practically no threat.
- Soldier 76 - if it weren't for his ultimate skill that requires the hero to see enemies to deal damage, Soldier 76 would be placed higher. However, enemies can hide inside rooms or behind a wall, which makes things significantly worse for this character.
B tier
The characters listed here are great in their roles, however, they may have a hard time appearing in each match due to their situational nature and skills. However, they are still very strong heroes worth your pick.
- Wrecking Ball - since he is difficult to master, especially for a new player, he was placed lower. Especially since using his rope and spinning around his axis is difficult if you don't have objects to grab onto.
- Brigitte - this is a great character to protect the rear of your team from heroes such as Tracer or Genji. She doesn't offer a lot of healing though (basically she can grant her team members armor).
- Echo - since she has the ability to fly and glide, she is not very suitable for battles on maps that require players to fight for a point or where there are tight spaces. However, she offers great versatility, thanks to the ability to copy moves (or rather turning into a given character for a short while).
- Pharah - just like Echo, she is much better suited to fighting in open space. She won't be able to use her full potential on smaller maps or inside buildings.
- Roadhog - this is an extreme case of a character who can either help your team a lot in quickly eliminating enemy heroes, while being difficult to kill, or causing your team to lose. Mainly because enemy heroes will be able to quickly charge their ultimate by attacking him.
C tier (situational characters)
The lowest tier, which does not mean that the characters are weak and not worth using. Here you will find heroes who are best at a specific task. If they are used for that specific purpose, they can even contribute a lot to winning the game. However, in other cases, they will not be very good at dealing with other heroes.
- Bastion - a hero that can change the fate of the game for the defending team, be it a specific point or, for example, to push an object. His tank configuration deals a lot of damage, and the ultimate ability that turns him into artillery allows you to fire deadly bombs at enemies from a distance. In offense, however, he is too slow - enemies will be able to kill him before he transforms.
- Symmetra - another character that is great in her role when she has to defend a given area. Mainly due to her ability to teleport her team from point A to B. Moreover, her turrets and photon barrier are perfect for defending the target. However, when attacking, she can only effectively use her weapons.
- Torbjorn - the situation is similar for this character. He doesn't offer anything special in the offense, unless he places the turret in a place where it will be difficult for enemies to destroy.
- Junkrat - a hero perfect for setting traps for enemies. He specializes in fighting in small spaces. He has very high damage, but poor accuracy. His bombs don't go very far, but they can be bounced off walls or other objects.
Summary
Remember that any character can be great if they are in the right hands. However, in some situations it is better to choose a versatile character than to play a hero who does not necessarily fit well in a given match. Try to switch heroes often if you are being countered and there is nothing you can do.
The new character, Kiriko, has not yet been included in the tier list since players are just starting to play as her and do not know what she can do, what she is good at and what shortcomings she has. With time, however, we will know to which tier she belongs.
