Metaphor ReFantazio is another game released by Atlus studio. Not surprisingly, one can see a lot of similarities to studio's most popular series, Persona. And while many of the mechanics are alike, one of them is missing, we are talking about the romance system (well, we can still steal). Being in a relationship in this game is both possible and impossible at the same time. It's... complicated.
Metaphor ReFantazio – Relationships Explained
It’s difficult not to compare Metaphor ReFantazio and the Persona series. The combat system, graphical style and UI are confusingly similar in both franchises. So, it's not surprising that many players thought they would be alike in terms of romance, too. Unfortunately, as the main director of this production explained (via The Gamer), you won't find romance options in the game. Or at least not as obvious as in previous Atlus studio titles...
Let’s remember that in previous installments of the Persona series, romances were already relegated to the sidelines. For example, they did not appear in the spin-off Persona 5 Strikers.
Remember Social Links from Persona? They are now replaced by Bonds. You can form friendships with your companions by increasing their level thanks to doing quests for them and developing Royal Virtues (like Courage, Wisdom or Tolerance). However, they are not directly romantic.
The following paragraph contains information on characters who, in a rather suggestive way, let the player know that they feel something more for the protagonist than friendship.
Some dialogs in the game suggest that there might be a feeling between characters. Especially, there are two companions whose lines somewhat implicitly suggest that they have some stronger feelings for the MC. We are talking about Junah and Eupha. Without going into details, if you don't want your character to get into any more intimate situation with these characters, don't perform their bonds. However, they are still not full-fledged romances.
