Who Is The Villain in Deadpool and Wolverine? Cassandra Nova's X-Men Ties, Origin and Powers Explained
Deadpool & Wolverine trailer has revealed to some extent what we can expect from the upcoming movie. For example, it revealed who the heroes will face. So meet Cassandra Nova.
The trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine has revealed the villain the pair of heroes will face. Although her name wasn’t spoken in the trailer, all indications are that Emma Corrin, whom you may associate with the role of the young Princess Diana from The Crown, is playing Cassandra Nova.
From the trailer, we were able to learn how Cassandra Nova looks in her full glory in Deadpool & Wolverine, and we also got a tiny glimpse of her powers when she confronted Wolverine. It was also shown that she doesn't act alone and has other villains on her side to support her in the Void. To learn more about this dangerous character, it's worth looking at her comic book counterpart, about whom we know quite a bit.
Who is Cassandra Nova and what ties with X-Men does she have?
Cassandra Nova is the evil twin of Charles Xavier, Professor X, who already tried to kill her brother in the womb, however, she ultimately lost this "battle" to Xavier, who sensed her evilness, and it was she who suffered death. This wasn’t the end of her story, however, as Cassandra was reborn in a new body, with Charles' DNA replicated, so she acquired abilities similar to his, and was eager for revenge. Her goal became to get rid of the leader of the X-Men at all costs, who she claimed was her only obstacle to world domination. In pursuit of her goal in E Is For Extinction, she convinced Donald Trask to commit genocide in Genosha, during which millions of mutants were annihilated (the same theme was depicted more recently in X-Men '97, although there someone completely different was behind the crime).
It seems that Cassandra Nova from Deadpool & Wolverine resides in the Void, a place to which the Time Variance Authority sends everything it wants to get rid of. This place seems to suit a character like Cassandra Nova, who is seen as an abomination and, according to many, shouldn’t exist.
What powers does Cassandra Nova have?
The scene from the trailer with Cassandra Nova that attracts the most attention is definitely the one where she confronts Wolverine and takes control of his arms. She can do this because in the comics she uses telepathy and telekinesis, and it looks like she has similar abilities in the movie, making her a very dangerous opponent.
However, what is shown in the trailer is only a fraction of her abilities. In the comics, in addition to the powers she gained from her brother's DNA, namely telepathy and telekinesis, she can also just duplicate DNA to create new bodies for herself. She can also, after analyzing a mutant's DNA, evolve selected traits of that mutant, as well as penetrate solid matter and regenerate much faster than a normal human. She also has the ability of astral projection, which allows her to leave her own body.
