Melee Weapon? Yes. Lightsabers? No. Helldivers 2 Devs Open to Crossovers With Other Brands, but They Must Make Sense
The developers of Helldivers 2 don't rule out crossovers with other brands. However, they put clear conditions on which such cooperation would be possible. The CEO of Arrowhead Game Studio also addressed the issue of bug fixing and new content in the shooter.
Would you want to come across a character from a different franchise while playing Helldivers 2? Perhaps this will happen someday, as Arrowhead Game Studio doesn't rule out crossovers in the future. However, as company representatives point out, the crossovers must make sense.
Helldivers 2 devs open to crossovers
During a discussion on the game's Discord server, one of the users asked the developers about possible crossovers. The community manager, known as Twinbeard, responded to this interesting issue. He provided specific examples of collaboration worth considering for Helldivers 2 and also mentioned entirely distinct universes.
We look at them [crossovers] with interest but also with a very large respect for the game fantasy and lore. Melee weapons could be plausible in Helldivers. Lightsabers from Star Wars would not. A Helldiver finding a remnant, artifact or a letter from someone from another game or cultural universe is plausible. Mickey Mouse writing a Helldiver would not. And so on. Crossovers have to make sense. We don't want to be Kingdom Hearts or Fortnite. If we do them, we want them to add something-feelgood, fun, a memory, but we like for it to make sense and fit in -- said the community manager of Helldivers 2 on Discord.
Ghost Ship Games, the devs of Deep Rock Galactic, are eager for a crossover with Helldivers 2. Last month, employees of this company played Helldivers and mentioned possible cooperation.
It must be admitted that combining Helldivers 2 with Deep Rock Galactic would be quite a good idea, which would probably fit into the "requirements" of Arrowhead Game Studio. Both games provide a co-op mode.
Patches and new content
It is also worth mentioning the recent words of Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game. He said that the team cannot just fix bugs in the game. Developers need to provide new content at the same time to continue attracting players to the game.
We want to deliver the best in the industry and we are calibrating our efforts of fixing vs new stuff. It's easy to say "just fix, don't add," but the reality of the competitiveness in this industry is that we have to do both to stay relevant -- said Pilestedt.
Potential crossovers could be very beneficial in keeping up that interest. Otherwise, Helldivers 2 may meet the fate of the infamous Palworld, which is dealing with a player exodus.
