Ubisoft was Surprised to Find Valhalla's Fictional Settlement in Real Life
One of the novelties in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the opportunity to expand our headquarters - Ravensthorpe. The place was designed as a fictional settlementm but to the surprise of Ubisoft, a town of the same name can be found at that location.
It's been a few days since Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's launch. During this time we got to know the most important elements of the game up close. Among the biggest novelties introduced by this installment of the series, we can definitely point out the possibility of expanding our own settlement - Ravensthorpe. What is most interesting, the devs of the game designed this place as a fictional settlement. It turned out, however, that they didn't quite manage to do that and in fact such a village actually exists, and in a very similar location.
One of the editors of the British Eurogamer, Oli Welsh, pointed out the matter. He revealed that he grew up in the area where Eivor's settlement was supposedly located. He also pointed out that a town called Ravensthorpe is in fact located there. However, according to AC Valhalla's main screenwriter, Darby McDevitt, it was a complete coincidence. He decided to explain the situation on Reddit, where this similarity was also noticed:
"We chose the name Ravensthorpe because Eivor's clan was the Raven clan, and Thorpe means "farmland"... and we set the settlement in the middle of Mercia so it was centrally located on the map.
We had NO idea that there was a real Ravensthorpe in exactly this location in real life, until a few months ago. Granted there is no river running by the real Ravensthorpe, but a lot can happen in 1000 years. Rivers change courses.
A sign from Odin."
You have to admit, it seems like an incredible coincidence. However, we have to take a correction for the fact that there are still at least two places in the UK called Ravensthorpe, which increases the chance of this happening.
