“There's a Chemistry to the Aggression They Throw at Each Other”. Logan in Veronica Mars Wasn't Supposed to Be the Main Character's Love Interest at All
Veronica Mars could have looked very different. It wasn't until some time after the TV series creators got on set that they discovered the potential in a plot that wasn't supposed to be that important, so they decided to invest in it.
Veronica Mars is certainly still remembered by many viewers. Twenty years ago, it was quite a hit, followed by a large number of fans who were curious not only about further events, but especially how the love adventures of the heroine played by Kristen Bell would turn out.
The actress recently made a lot of noise with her new TV show, Nobody Wants This, and while promoting it she gave an interview to Vanity Fair, during which she talked about her past roles. Of course, she had to mention Veronica Mars. During that interview, Bell talked about the fact that the main character's love interest was originally supposed to be Duncan, but the chemistry between Veronica actress and Jason Dohring, who played Logan, made the plans change.
What's interesting is Logan wasn't written as Veronica's love interest. It was supposed to be Duncan, and somehow, within the filming of the first couple of episodes, people started commenting on the chemistry between Logan and Veronica, probably because it's that old trope that's like bad boy and semi-good girl, who probably shouldn't. There's a heat and chemistry to the aggression they throw at each other. This is a testament to the good writing that was like, "we could continue going into this direction, or we could take what we have, which is what we think is this chemistry, and write toward it and see what these actors can pull off."
The decision turned out to be a good one. Opting for a complicated love triangle that used the chemistry between Veronica and Logan kept fans engaged with the love storylines in the TV series. If they hadn't taken a risk and changed the direction the story was going, Veronica Mars would have looked very different.
And looking at what a hit the TV show was, which initially lived to see three seasons, and years later, in 2019, also a fourth, the creators couldn't have done the production a bigger favor.
