„There Are Death Troopers for a Reason.” Star Wars: Outlaws Director Described How GTA-Modeled Wanted Level Lets You Play Cat-And-Mouse With Empire
The developers of Star Wars: Outlaws claim that their game will allow you to evade the forces of the Empire in a number of different ways, including using hyperspace. The developers also revealed some of the titles they took inspiration from when developing the space adventure.
The marketing campaign for Star Wars: Otulaws seems to have really taken off. The game developers are increasingly willing to share details about the mechanics and systems of the game.
Many ways to escape from the Empire
One of the most widely discussed mechanics, which has been promoted since the announcement of Outlaws, is the so-called wanted level, which is to some extent modeled on the one known from the Grand Theft Auto series. In a nutshell: the more serious offenses we commit, the greater the forces of the Empire will pursue us. In an interview with IGN, the game's director, Mathias Karlson, revealed that even elite units of Death Troopers will be able to engage in the pursuit of the main character.
[...] And let's just say there are [in the game] Death Troopers for a reason -- said the director of Star Wars: Outlaws.
Unlike the latest installments of the GTA series, we won't have the option to escape and wait for the situation to calm down and for the law enforcement to "forget" about the offenses committed. Some of the imperial forces can be bribed. Alternatively, hyperspace jump could also be a method of escape.
It's really up to you if you want to try and hide or maybe bribe an Imperial officer that's a bit corrupt in a city somewhere, or try to hyper jump to a different space region [...]. It [the game] has a good range of escalation and de-escalatio -- assured Karlson.
Furthermore, the reputation system associated with the numerous factions in the Outlaws may prove helpful in clashes with the Imperial forces. By gaining proper recognition from one of the organizations, we will be able to rely on their support in fights with the forces of the Empire, provided that they are nearby.
Mass Effect 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey as inspirations for devs
It's also worth mentioning interesting statements from another Outlaws developer, Navid Khavari, who is the narrative director. He mentioned several titles that had a significant impact on the work of Massive Entertainment developers in creating this space adventure.
Khavari highlighted games like Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey as examples of what should be the standard for terrain design.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey was one of the games that we were looking at while creating Outlaws. You have different zones on the map Toshara [a planet in Outlaws] is two or three of those put together -- Khavari told IGN service.
The dev also pointed to inspirations from the world of cinematography. Here, the role models for developers were to be the movies of Akira Kurosawa, the original Star Wars trilogy by George Lucas, as well as films from the Ocean's series.
I think you look at everything [when it comes to inspiration] from Ocean's 11 and Ocean's 8 to Star Wars itself.
Star Wars: Outlaws will be released on August 30 this year. The game will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
