If any of you can imagine the heaven of every gaming fan, the Games Archive could be such a place. Embracer Group, the massive conglomerate formerly known as THQ Nordic AB, has recently announced announced an initiative to archive and save as many video games and related products as possible.
The idea behind the project
"Our mission is to acquire a physical copy of every video game ever released. We know that this is a tremendously difficult task because games are still being released in physical form, and we hope that this will not change. We believe this is a lofty goal that is important and worthy of following to preserve our collective gaming history," reads the announcement on Embracer's official website.
The project is in its early stages, but already more than 50,000 games, consoles and various accessories have been collected and are waiting to be catalogued.
Below you can watch a video shared by the company. It shows the "vault" in which the items have been collected.
Further plans
According to what the Embracer group has written on its website , the next stage in the development of the Karlstad archive will be to collaborate with museums, academics and journalists, who are also interested in researching the history of video games. Ultimately the company wants to exhibit parts of the archive locally and through exhibitions in other locations..
Not only archiving
In addition to packing the warehouse with tens of thousands of games, Embracer is also involved in purchasing game studios and intellectual property. The company recently announced the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal and Eidos Montreal teams from Square Enix. The Swedish corporation also took possession of several brands, including Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Thief (which we wrote about here).
