Today we are used to the fact that multiplatform games are almost identical on PC and consoles. In the past, however, the hardware differences between platforms were much greater, so developers porting projects from PCs to consoles often had to be very inventive.
One example is Quake II in its version for the first PlayStation. A standard conversion was impossible, so HammerHead Studios practically developed an almost new game on their own engine, just based on the visual style and gameplay of the PC original. Now PC gamers can finally see how big the differences were thanks to Quake II PSX modification .
The mod is designed for last year's re-release of Quake II, developed by the Nightdive studio. Importantly, the authors have not limited themselves to a simple recreation of 20 maps from the PlayStation One version. They also corrected many of that version's problems, heavily improved the AI of enemies, and beautified some sections. All of this required a lot of work. Transferring data from the console original was not feasible in practice, so the authors had to recreate most elements from scratch themselves.
The difficulty level was also changed. Quake II on the PSOne was easier because it was developed with pad-based play in mind. Therefore, when playing these maps on the PC, a lot of changes were necessary so that the level of challenge remained high enough when playing with a mouse and keyboard.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that Quake II on PSOne was not the only version of id Software studio's blockbuster that differed strongly from the PC original. The same was true of the Nintendo 64 release. Here, however, no mod is needed, as the entire Quake II 64 - with 19 campaign maps and 10 for deathmatch - was included in last year's re-release of the game.
