After Almost 4 Years, System Shock 2 Remaster Got a Trailer
Nightdive Studios has finally released the first trailer and screenshots from System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, a remaster of the iconic 1999 game.
Fans of the series featuring the murderous AI Shodan have been busy in recent years mostly bemoaning the endless delays of the System Shock remake. In contrast, announced almost four years ago System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, a remaster of the second part of the series, was forgotten, both by gamers and, it seemed, the devs themselves, as they did not release any materials from this project. Now this has finally changed.
Nightdive Studios has released the first trailer for the remaster of System Shock 2. It's interesting because the footage from cutscenes is accompanied by a small window that shows what they looked like in the 1999 original.
At the end of the trailer there are also some gameplay sequences. They show improved textures and revised models of weapons and enemies. Importantly, we can see that the devs have kept their promises and models of enemies, although more detailed, retain the style of the originals. This was very important for fans, as Nightdive Studios is known to have worked with modders to include many of their designs in the remaster. Some of the modifications, while improving the enemies, heavily altered their designs (a good example of this can be found here), which was controversial; most fans of the brand prefer the original look of these characters.
In addition to tweaking the visuals, the remaster is also expected to improve controls, add support for higher resolutions, and thoroughly revamp the co-op mode to provide smoother progression in the campaign.
Unfortunately, for now, we don't know when the release of System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition will take place. What is known is that the remake of System Shock will debut in just ten days, i.e. on May 30.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the authors have released a series of screenshots of the remaster SS2, which allow you to take a closer look at the graphical improvements:
