New Open-world Survival is Here; Treat for Caribbean and History Fans
Survival enthusiasts just got another interesting item to check out. In Survival: Fountain of Youth we have to survive in the Caribbean as a member of an expedition searching for the titular Fountain of Youth.
Steam's Early Access has a number of survival titles in its vast library. Yesterday, the lost was expanded by Survival: Fountain of Youth - a survival adventure game that takes the action to the 16th century. The game's developer is the independent studio Odinsoft.
In the title we play the role of a member of an expedition searching for the Fountain of Youth. The plot leads us to the Caribbean, where we will have to survive as a castaway on the islands after a sea disaster. Interestingly, the game refers to real historical events - the expedition of the Spanish captain Juan Ponce de Leon, whose subordinate is the main character.
Inhospitable Caribbean
In terms of gameplay mechanics Survival: Fountain of Youth puts in the hands of the player a classic toolkit known from many titles in this genre.
The key is exploration of terrain, gathering resources, building shelter and means of transportation. Due to the fact that we are on an archipelago, we will mainly travel by sea, hence the game offers a rich array of naval units - from primitive rafts to large ships.
Over time, our basic tools will be replaced by slightly more advanced ones: we'll replace a stick with an axe, an axe with a musket, and so on. As we progress, we will also unlock more skills that will help us in the wilderness, such as skinning animals (there will be more than 30 species to hunt in the game).
In the wilderness our enemy will not only be hostile fauna, but also various diseases, such as malaria. Hunger, cold and unfavorable weather also work against us.
Survival: Fountain of Youth enables the players to explore 15 different islands, and each island differs slightly in fauna, flora and terrain; so we can encounter both sandy beaches and deep swamps.
Positive reception
The game debuted yesterday and is collecting positive reviews on Steam (although for the time being there aren't many) - 76% of nearly 70 player reviews are positive. At most, nearly a 1000 people played Survival: Fountain of Youth, and although this is not a very impressive result, it bodes well for the future.
