Star Wars: Dark Forces - Iconic FPS Gets Fan-made Remaster
Version 1.0 of The Force Engine project, a fan remaster of the iconic FPS Star Wars: Dark Forces, has been released.
Released in 1995, Star Wars: Dark Forces is one of the greatest gems of the early FPS era. For a long time, however, it was difficult to play this title comfortably on modern PCs. This was only changed by the fan project called The Force Engine, which has just reached version 1.0.
What The Force Engine Gives You
The modification offers a new, significantly upgraded game engine. Not only does it provide full compatibility with modern PCs and operating systems, but it also brings many improvements, including:
- Support for ultra widescreen resolutions.
- The ability to play with upgraded mouse and keyboard controls, reminiscent of what modern FPS games offer.
- The option to play with a gamepad.
- A new game state saving system.
- Gameplay enhancements, including improvements to Bobba Fett's broken AI.
- Upgraded support for mods. Not only is it easier to install them, but the engine has its limits lifted, eliminating problems that arise with the most ambitious modifications.
Importantly, all these improvements are optional. Purists can play at 320x200 resolution and with DOS-like controls, enjoying only more fps and no need to use DOSBox.
Currently, the modification supports Star Wars: Dark Forces, but in the future (in version 2.0) support is to be added for Outlaws as well.
Release of version 1.0 of The Force Engine is good news. Fans of many other classic games from that era for many years could enjoy such modifications as GZDoom (for games on Doom engine), EDuke32 (for Duke Nukem 3D) or QuakeSpasm and DarkPlaces (for the first Quake). The availability of such projects is very beneficial, as it not only makes it easier to play older titles, but also has the effect of strengthening the modding community, resulting in more fan projects. Hopefully The Force Engine will do the same for Star Wars: Dark Forces.
What about Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II?
It is worth mentioning at the end that also Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II along with the Mysteries of the Sith DLC have lived to see mods acting as unofficial remasters.
