Phil Spencer Treats PS5 and Switch Users Like Members of Xbox Community

For Phil Spencer, owners of Sony and Nintendo consoles have become members of the Xbox community. This follows the approval of Microsoft's nearly $69 billion deal to buy Activision Blizzard.

The head of the Xbox division, Phil Spencer, feels very confident after the finalization of Activision Blizzard deal last month. This is evidenced by his words in an interview for Famitsu, in which he explicitly said that he treats users of PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch consoles as members of the ecosystem created by Microsoft, as the company will be releasing games for these platforms.

There's no denying that the company has reasons to be happy. The merger with Activision Blizzard, which has dragged out for months, has finally been completed, and this means an influx of quite a few new (and big!) brands into the Xbox family - among them are the Call of Duty series, Overwatch, Diablo or World of Warcraft.

  1. After buying Activision Blizzard, Microsoft became the owner of the very popular Call of Duty, which was one of the main bones of contention in the acquisition's approval.
  2. Sony did not want the brand to go under Microsoft's wing. The Japanese giant was concerned about the exclusivity of the series, which has a solid PlayStation player base. Such a move could also result in a drop in revenue for the Japanese manufacturer.
  3. After the finalization of the acquisition worth about 69 billion, however, Sony has no choice but to rely on Microsoft's next publishing decisions.
  4. As for Nintendo, Microsoft has signed a deal with the Japanese through which Call of Duty games will return to their devices for at least another 10 years. That's why Switch owners were also counted by Spencer as part of the Xbox community. It is worth mentioning here that the Redmond giant was considering buying whole Nintendo.

Microsoft has a different strategy than Sony

For a long time now, the head of Xbox has been saying that the goal of the company is to bring games to more gamers. His interview with Famitsu may be, as it were, further confirmation of these assertions.

Let's point out that Microsoft's strategy relies primarily on its Game Pass service, which can be purchased by owners of PCs, Xbox consoles or even Samsung TVs (newer models include a corresponding application).
