Sony PlayStation Faces Class Action Lawsuit Amounting to 5 Billion Pounds
Sony's got trouble in the UK. A 5 billion pound class action lawsuit has been filed against the company for „ripping people off” when they make purchases through the PlayStation Store.
British PlayStation users may soon be part of one of the biggest gaming trials of recent years. As reported by Sky News, Sony PlayStation has been sued in a class action lawsuit for 5 billion pounds in damages.
At issue are allegedly inflated prices for games and other products available on the UK PlayStation Store. Nine million people are entitled to claim compensation.
Did Sony "rip off people"?
The lawsuit was brought to court by Alex Neill, a lawyer from a company dedicated to helping organize collective legal actions. According to the information she provided, British customers could have collectively lost up to 5 billion pounds in connection with a 30 percent commission on each purchase from Sony's online store.
The claim was filed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal on Friday. All customers who have made purchases from PlayStation's digital store since August 19, 2016, can seek compensation, which could range from 67 to 562 pounds (not including interest).
"Game over" for PlayStation
Lawyers handling the case agree - Sony took advantage of its position in the market and charged its customers much higher than it should have. The lawsuit is certainly unprecedented, if only for its scale.
As previously mentioned lawyer Alex Neil said:
"This is game over for PlayStation. With this legal action, I am standing up for the millions of Britons who have been unknowingly overcharged. We believe Sony has abused its position and ripped off customers.
Gaming is now the largest entertainment industry in the UK, overtaking TV, video and music, and many vulnerable people rely on games for community and connection. Sony's actions are costing millions of people money they can't afford, especially when we're in the midst of a cost of living crisis and the consumer's wallet is skinnier than ever."
