Sony May Have Quietly Upgraded DualSense Controllers
The new color versions of the DualSense controller for PlayStation 5 may have receive some major improvements. Interestingly, Sony has not officially announced this.
January 28 saw the release of three new colors variants for PlayStation 5's DualSense controller: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. In addition to the higher prices - reaching $74, while the "normal" (white) pad costs "only" $54 - the devices may incorporate some minor, yet significant improvements.
New, better trigger springs
Has the battery life been extended? Unfortunately not. However, a YouTube user running the TronicsFix channel has taken the new controllers apart and noticed that their adaptive triggers have new springs - different from the original white gamepad or its alternative color versions (Cosmic Red and Midnight Black).
According to the youtuber, the new springs appear to be more durable. This is important because the ones that were used in previous models failed quite often. This means Sony may have quietly eliminated one of the most commonly reported controller flaws. The question is why the company has not officially announced it.
Changes to the main controller board
From the above video, published on the TronicsFix channel, you can also find out that the new color versions of the DualSense have slightly different motherboards than the previous editions. Presumably, this is a step towards solving the problems with the so-called stick drift that already existed in controllers for the PS4 (and also the Xbox One).
For now, however, there is not enough detailed analysis to conclude a definite improvement in this matter. And this is more than necessary, because according to research DualSense's stick life span is approximately 417 hours.
