Sony in Turmoil? PS5 May Have Problems With Overheating
Windows Central editors report that Sony encountered serious problems while working on the PS5. The console is reportedly overheating and it cannot be ruled out that both its cooling system and case will have to be redesigned.
IN A NUTSHELL:
- According to journalists of Windows Central, PS5 has serious problems with overheating;
- The Japanese may have to redesign the case and cooling system, which may result in a delay of 6-12 months;
- If the console's design is not changed, the device may suffer failures (problems similar to RRoD from Xbox 360);
- The information was not officially confirmed.
We've recently learned a lot of new information about the specs of PlayStation 5, but we still don't know what it looks like, which is quite unusual (for the PS4 all the details had already been made public at the time). It cannot be ruled out that this is not an accident. Dan Rubino and Jez Corden - journalists from Windows Central - report that the current version of PS5 has serious problems with overheating. Sony may have to redesign the case and the cooling system. In such a situation the release of the console will probably be delayed by 6-12 months.
Excessive heat generation is said to result from both advanced components (a modern processor and GPU from AMD combined with a super-fast SSD), but also some of the solutions used by Sony - primarily a variable-clock system, which makes the temperature inside the console is slightly different for each game. Coping with this challenge may require a vertical XSX-like chassis. If the engineers can't find a way out, we may have to deal with a situation similar to the RRoD failure that many Xbox 360 users have complained about.
It's worth noting that the sources of the reports remain anonymous, and the information contradicts previous leaks about PS5's cooling system. However, the lack of any tangible facts regarding the appearance of the PS5 is somewhat puzzling. It cannot be ruled out that Sony was surprised by the powerful specs of the Xbox Series X. Perhaps the company was forced to squeeze much more performance out of its design at the last minute to avoid even more unfavourable comparisons with its competitors?
It remains to be hoped that the Japanese will quickly debunk the rumors - preferably by finally showing their ninth generation hardware.
