Sea of Thieves Climbs the Popularity Ranks on Steam

Sea of Thieves recovers on Steam. The game is slowly regaining popularity, and soon it may even catch up with the numbers from the launch period on Valve's platform.

The pirate game Sea of Thieves scored the biggest jump of online players on Steam since its launch on the platform. And although in December the number of simultaneously logged-in users was different and ranged between 4 to 10 thousand, after the holidays, the popularity of the game began increase, reaching as much as 40 thousand players at the same time, until the peak at January 2, when the indicator showed as many as 52,916 users at once (via SteamCharts).

Although this is not a number to rival what we've seen in June last year, when the game launched in Valve's store, we can ask ourselves - why such a jump in popularity? Although the number of players started to grow already in November, Steam Winter Sale is responsible for the biggest user growth so far. Unfortunately, the promotion, where we were able to buy Sea of Thieves 50% off, ended yesterday evening.

Surely the sale had a big impact on the increased number of players, but it is not the only possible reason for new users to arrive and old pirates to return to the port. As Rare announces, 2021 will be a breakthrough year for the game and many users may want to keep up to date with meta, so that after the update is introduced, they will not be overwhelmed by the latest additions and thus discourage themselves from having fun with their friends.

What will 2021 bring to Sea of Thieves? This is what Adrian has already written about here. In short, it looks like the game will move from a monthly update model to a season-based one, with each one adding new missions, events etc. There will also be the popular way of rewarding players for progression, i.e. a battle pass known from Fortnite or PUBG, in this case called Plunder Pass.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC on Microsoft Store and Steam platforms, as well as on Xbox One console. The game is also included in the Xbox Game Pass subscription.
