Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart PC Shows That Releasing It on PS4 Would be a Bad Idea
Specialists tested how Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart could run on the PlayStation 4 console. The result? Well, if you are allergic to long freezes in video games, you'd better not watch the footage.
Even before the PlayStation 5 console debuted on the market, Sony repeatedly stressed that the super-fast SSD used in it was one of its key components. While at the time such words could be perceived as a marketing ploy, they have recently made a lot of sense.
This was helped by Digital Foundry, which decided to test the PC port of Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart released a few days ago (yesterday we described for you the results of the main tests). Interestingly, in one of the tests, the website used for testing a PC with specs similar to PS4 Pro - equipped, among other things, with an HDD equivalent to that of the console. What was the result?
It quickly became clear that this was not the best idea, as the HDD completely failed to cope with data volume transfer. While the gameplay was acceptable during free exploration in a single world, when we passed through a portal, the game sometimes outright crashed.. Anyway, see for yourself in the video below.
It is worth mentioning that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was from the beginning a game developed for the PS5 console and its fast SSD. However, when Insomniac revealed the minimum system requirements for the PC version of the game (which included an HDD) there were claims that the adventure game could just as well run on PS4.
Nothing could be further from the truth, because, as Digital Foundry rightly pointed out, PlayStation 4's HDD was much slower than those currently installed in PCs - despite the fact that in both cases we are talking about the same type of media.
Therefore, you can play the PC version of Rift Apart with the use of an HDD without any problems. However, this requires a faster drive than that of the PS4.
