Radeon VII announced - competition for RTX 2080
AMD has unveiled its latest graphics card, Radeon VII. The first 7 nm lithographic gaming card will make its debut next month and is set to fight against the competitive GeForce RTX 2080.
Information from the world revealed some time ago that Nvidia is only about to create GPUs using lithographic process of 7nm and will not present them earlier than next year. Meanwhile, competitors from AMD have just announced the first card based on this technology. At CES 2019, Lisa Su – CEO of AMD, has presented the company's latest product, Radeon VII manufactured with 7nm lithography. In practice, it will be the second generation of the Vega system, lowered to the mentioned 7nm. The card will have 60 computing units (3840 SP) and 16 GB of HBM memory with a bandwidth of 1 TB/s. If you believe AMD's promises, Radeon VII will offer a 25% increase in performance over the older Radeon RX Vega 64. In practice, the card will provide more efficient gaming performance compared to its predecessor: 35% more in Battlefield V (DirectX 12), 25% increase in Fortnite (DirectX 11) and 42% in Strange Brigade (Vulkan). A comparison with GeForce RTX 2080, at least according to the manufacturer, is also positive: in BFV and Fortnite both cards provide similar performance, and in Strange Brigade AMD is 19% more efficient than the competitor. Importantly, the card will not consume more power than its predecessor.
It looks good on paper, but as always you have to see if the future will verify these promises. The wait will not be long - Radeon VII will debut on 7 February at a suggested price of 699 dollars, identical to the GeForce GTX 2080. It is worth mentioning that the set includes three games that will soon be debuting with the card: Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 2 and Tom Clancy's The Division 2. It is possible that such a starter kit will suffice to convince many undecided players - provided that the card itself is worth buying.
