Obsidian Said to be Working on Detective RPG Pentiment
Reliable rumors have appeared in the web, according to which Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on a detective RPG Pentiment. There were also reports about Midnight, a new project by the devs of We Happy Few.
- A detective RPG set in the Renaissance era;
- Focus on investigation and conversations;
- Inspired by Disco Elysium;
- Led by Josh Sawyer, known from Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity.
For some time there have been rumors that in addition to Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian Entertainment is also working on a third major project. First reports about this production have finally appeared. According to them, it will be a detective RPG set in the Renaissance era.
The game is titled Pentiment and the devteam is led by Josh Sawyer, known from Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. This is supposed to be a smaller project (currently twelve people are working on it), because the creators want it to resemble an indie production in terms of execution and atmosphere.
In Pentiment we play as a detective living in 16th century, who will receive a task to solve a case of brutal murder. During the investigation he will discover that the crime is a part of bigger conspiracy. The game is to be very non-linear, and the plot will be shaped by the player's decisions.
Interestingly, the developers' inspiration is supposed to be the excellent Disco Elysium - the gameplay will focus on conversations and investigation rather than combat. While conducting the investigation we will gather information and evidence to eventually use them to accuse suspects of crimes. Possible mistakes will have serious consequences for the course of the story.
All these reports should of course be treated with caution until the official announcement, though. However, the sources of this information are very reliable. They were first made available by the usually well-informed journalist Jeff Grubb from VentureBeat. Then they were confirmed by Jez Corden from Windows Central, who also added a simple artwork from the project.

Additionally, Corden obtained an information about the new game from Compulsion Games, devs of We Happy Few. The studio was bought out by Microsoft in 2018 and its first new project being developed under the Xbox Games Studios banner is expected to be Midnight.
The pgame is described as a third-person action game, set in a dark fantasy universe modeled on the gothic folklore of the American South. Midnight is supposed to a single player and will heavily emphasize narrative.
