Nintendo Boasts of Millions of Games Sold in 2020

Nintendo ended the 2020 fiscal year on a considerable positive note. By March 2021, the Japanese giant had sold 28 million Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite consoles. Leading the sales, in terms of games, was the latest installment of Animal Crossing.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Nintendo shared its financial results for its latest fiscal year;
  2. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite consoles sold 37% better than the year before;
  3. Nintendo's best selling game last year was Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Over 28 million Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite consoles were sold in the last fiscal year alone (ending in March 2021), according to sales figures released by Nintendo. The result is 37% better than recorded previous year (21 million units). Since the Switch's release in 2017, a total of 84.5 million consoles have reached the hands of players. In comparison, another popular platform of the Japanese manufacturer - Wii (launched in 2006), has so far sold 101.6 million units.

This means that Nintendo has survived the pandemic in good shape, and the Nintendo Switch is pushing up the ranking of best-selling consoles. The report also lists the most profitable and best-selling games for Switch last year. Of the 36 titles that reached over a million copies, as many as 22 are from Nintendo. The list is presented below:

On the first place, with a clear advantage over the rest, we see Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold almost 21 million copies. The other two spots on the podium were occupied by games signed with the name of the most famous plumber in the world: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (10.6 million) and Super Mario 3D All Stars (9.01 million). There were many more games from the Mario universe on the list, but a good result was also achieved by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokemon games.

From the report we can learn that a new color version of Nintendo Switch Lite (blue) will hit the stores later this month. This is interesting information, although gamers would prefer to hear more details about the upcoming, improved version of the console, tentatively named Nintendo Switch Pro, which may enter the market later this year. One thing is certain - the Japanese giant is not slowing down. Who knows what result they will achieve this year?
