New Fear Effect game to be a tactical RPG inspired by Shadowrun Returns
Fear Effect Sedna is the next installment in Square Enix's action game series first released in 2000s for PlayStation. This one, however, will be a tactical RPG inspired by Shadowrun Returns.
A long time ago, in the year 2000, Kronos Digital Entertainment gave the world an AAA action adventure game called Fear Effect for PlayStation, which soon received a prequel. Now, a new Fear Effect game is in development – this time, however, it’s being made by an independent French studio Sushee (creators of dark-themed adventure game Goetia). Eurogamer learned that Fear Effect Sedna is going to be an incarnation of Square Enix’s franchise, but instead of an action game, we will get a turn-based tactical RPG heavily inspired by Harebrained Schemes’ Shadowrun Returns. This will be evident in such features as isometric view, strategic gameplay, team made up of five mercenaries, and close cooperation between the characters.
Story-wise, Fear Effect Sedna will be a sequel to the first two installments as well as the cancelled third game. To assure a visible bond in this regard, the developer was given access to Fear Effect 3 prototype. They also gor help from the original director, John Zuur Platten. The new game will see the return of well-known characters, including Hana, Rain Qin, Royce Glas and Jacob “Deke” DeCourt.
Since Fear Effect Sedna is being made under Square Enix’s Collective program (the publisher promotes small indie devs, while keeping their creative freedom), the project will need financial support from its fans. Hence, its Kickstarter campaign is launching next week, on April 12. If it’s successful, the game will come out for PC in mid-2017. Console versions are one of the campaign’s stretch goals.
