Netflix's Witcher - Henry Cavill on Fans, Haters and Geralt
Henry Cavill, the actor playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, was a guest on Jake's Takes. In four minutes he revealed his favorite roles and admitted how he perceives the fans. Including persons considered to be toxic.
A short interview with Henry Cavill appeared on the YouTube channel run by journalist Jake Hamilton. In Jake's Takes, the British actor playing the lead role in The Witcher series produced by the VOD platform Netflix revealed his attitude towards fans, haters and Geralt of Rivia. The conversation lasted four minutes.
The host first asked his guest about which of the characters he played would he like to get to know best. Cavill pointed out two characters he is most interested in: Superman and Geralt. He played the role of the first of the aforementioned heroes in Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and League of Justice (2017). His creation of the White Wolf, we'll debut on the screens soon. The Witcher series will debut on Netflix on December 20 this year. The actor also confessed that this choice was influenced not only by his work. He is equally interested in these heroes and would like to get to know them better, even if he is not directly connected with them.
Hamilton noticed that in films with Superman, despite the hero's sincere intentions, people often put obstacles in his way. The journalist asked Cavill whether the fans' reception of the character is similar, with toxic groups appearing among them. The actor's response was very liberal and somewhat surprising. In his opinion, fans have the right to have whatever opinion they want, and dissatisfaction cannot be avoided. This is particularly true for roles based on books and games, as the actor will never be exactly as the audience imagined the character to be. So he won't play out every inch of Geralt's behaviour, e.g. from the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
I wouldn't call this [behavior] toxic. I think it's more of passion I've come across many times over the years," added Cavill.
The actor pointed out that the opinions of fans are influenced by many factors (e.g. xenophobia, sexism, colonialism). Their fear is turned against something else. As an example he gave Geralt, who is stronger and more efficient than the average person, and also lives beyond society and beyond control. So when he shows up in town, he makes you scared. That is why he is the focus of all the evil energy that gathers in people, through everything that remains above them.
