Netflix's Video Game Flop Got Less Than 1% of Subscribers Interested
Netflix Games is not doing well. Less than two million subscribers regularly test the video games available on the service.
Last November marked the launch of Netflix Games, an additional service on Netflix, where subscribers can check out a range of video games available in the library at no extra charge. Regardless of the giant's intentions in terms of attracting new users or retaining old ones, it appears that these efforts have come to nothing (or almost nothing). The CBNC report shows that of Netflix's 221 million subscribers, on average only 1.7 million regularly play the games offered on the platform (they run them every day). In other words, this represents less than 1% of subscribers.
The analysis also shows that despite its low popularity, Netflix Games has not gone unnoticed. Indeed, the games offered have been downloaded 23.3 million times. Details, including the number of downloads per person, are not known. The report also does not reveal how many users log into their Netflix account each day. Disregarding this, the conclusion is that the game offering has apparently not proved very attractive to gamers, and other subscribers rarely reach for this form of entertainment. The information is consistent with data provided by Apptopia - a global app tracking tool.
Netflix Games - what does it come with?
Netflix Games is an additional service that is included in Netflix subscription. The current offering includes 26 games, including Moonlighter, Into the Breach or Asphalt Xtreme. In addition, the service offers two titles based on the original and highly acclaimed show Stranger Things. We are talking about Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game. The number and scope of offered games are not very impressive, but the company has ambitious plans for the future. By the end of 2022, Netflix plans to significantly expand its catalog - the number of games is expected to increase to more than 50.
In addition to paying for a subscription, you don't have to pay any additional fees to download or play the titles available on Netflix Games. The current price list for the entire service is broken down into three packages:
- Basic - $7.99/month, SD picture quality and 1 screen
- Standard - $9.99/month, Full HD picture quality and 2 screens
- Premium - $14.99/month and 4K/HDR quality and 4 screens
It is worth noting at the same time , that the service's prices and design may change in the near future. Netflix is testing additional fees for account sharing, which could mean that over time the platform could be in for some big changes.
All games from Netflix Games can only be played on mobile devices. The app is compatible with Android 8.0 or later, and in the case of iPhones, iPads or iPod touch with iOS/iPadOS 15 or later. To play, you'll need to install the game on a disk and have a permanent Internet connection. Also note that games can only be played from a normal profile (child accounts do not have such access)..
At the end of the day, time will tell if the giant's investment in this branch of entertainment was right. Currently, it's a niche, but one that could gain popularity. If the company's ambitions come to fruition, we will still be able to play more than 50 games before the end of the year. The coming months promise to be an important time in terms of the development of Netflix Games.
