Mass Effect 5 May be Powered by Unreal Engine 5
Mass Effect 5 could be running on Unreal Engine 5. A job offer posted by Electronic Arts would strongly suggests this.
- Mass Effect 5 may be powered by Unreal Engine 5;
- GamesBeat reports that no final decision has been made yet on whether to use (or abandon) the Frostbite engine.
Mass Effect 5 may be using Unreal Engine 5. GamesBeat reports that one of the job offers posted by Electronic Arts mentions the engine.
In the offer for the position of Technical Director (Franchise) at BioWare, one of the requirements is knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 or a newer version. As GamesBeat's editor discovered after speaking with anonymous members of the development team, no decision has yet been made to use Frostbite (which powered Mass Effect: Andromeda) and there's a good chance that Mass Effect 5 will be built on Unreal Engine 5.
Here it is worth remembering that the original trilogy runs on the engine designed by Epic Games. Later, Electronic Arts changed its approach and ordered all internal studios to use DICE's in-house solution - Frostbite. This brought major problems for every franchise except the Battlefield series. I don't think anyone needs to be reminded of the problems encountered during the development of Dragon Age: Inquisition and the final quality of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
So it seems that after years of failures EA learned its lesson and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was not a one-off shot (the title runs on Unreal Engine 4). For confirmation (or possible dementi), we will have to wait. According to rumors Mass Effect 5 is to hit the market around 2025.
