LoL Fans Examine Terraria Plagiarism Allegations [UPDATED]

Battle Boss skins in League of Legends are supposed to be associated with other games, but this time Riot Games went a step too far, causing players to accuse the developers of plagiarism.

Update

As it turned out, the person responsible for creating the Battle Boss Bel'Veth artworks was not the author of the mod. Nevertheless, Riot apparently noticed the similarity pointed out by the players, which resulted in changing the heroine's life bar on the splash artwork. You can see the new version below.

Original message

Drawing inspiration from the work of other creators is perfectly fine. The problem starts when someone's work is almost the same as another artist's. This problem has affected League of Legends, where players have noticed the uncanny resemblance of Battle Boss Bel'Veth's splash art to one used in Terraria.

Battle Boss Bel'Veth

The skin, as well as the characters, is only available on PBE, but that didn't stop players from analyzing the graphic presenting Battle Boss Bel'Veth.

User Roder777 pointed out the very close resemblance of the life bar seen on the heroine's splash art to one created by a modder named Tyler as a modification to Terraria.

The similarities do not end with the general appearance. Roder777 also decided to roughly compare both graphics and well - the distances between the stripes or the pixel placement are the same.

Plagiarism, or maybe not?

The author of the post, wanting to draw attention to the original author of the graphic, provided a link to his profile. As it turns out, Tyler has California as his place of residence on his Steam profile. Why is this important? Well, Riot Games has one of its headquarters in this city.

Therefore, some players began to speculate that such a striking similarity is actually an intended effect, because we can never be sure that Tyler doesn't happen to work for Riot. Comments began to appear on the modder's Steam profile informing of the situation, and the author of the post contacted Tyler.

At the time of writing this message the modder has not responded, but Roder777 has assured that he will update the post as soon as he receives a reply. Until then, it is better not to accuse Riot of plagiarism.

Riot has had a few slip-ups in the past

On the occasion of this situation, the LoL community could refresh their memory a bit. Some users recalled the situation with an emote available in the game, which looks almost identical to the works of the artist known as "pon mei". You can read the description of the controversy here.

Also, the situation concerning one of the characters in LoL did not went unnocited. The Community claims that Riot apparently found inspiration in the work of Chiara Bautista in its project Kindred. Of course, inspiration does not equal plagiarism, but as one of the commenters wrote - the artist was not too pleased with the fact that the creators of LoL apparently drew from her work without giving credit where it is due.
