Riot Games to Pay Compensation to 1,548 Women for Gender Discrimination [UPDATE]

Riot Games' discrimination case against women is coming to an end. The settlement obliges LoL developers to pay a total of $100 million to more than 1,500 people.

As reported by Axios, new court documents show that current and former employees eligible for the payout will receive between $5,000 and $156,056.

Developers of League of Legends and Valorant must pay $100 million in compensation to more than 1,500 women. As reported in an April declaration from Rust Consulting, a company dealing with the issue (as reported by Axios), each of them will initially receive between $2,500 and $5,000 in compensation, and some of them may eventually get up to $40,000.

This is essentially the culmination of a case dragging on for Riot Games since 2018. That's when a class action lawsuit was filed over accusations by former female employees of gender discrimination, including sexual harassment.

Initially there was talk of a $10 million settlement. However, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) ruled that the aggrieved women could seek up to $400 million in damages.

Eventually, in late 2021, the developer pledged to pay $100 million to 1548 people, which was approved by the court in mid-2022. Axios also reports that seven women opted out of the settlement.

The verdict is expected to be approved on May 16. Recall that Riot Games had already committed to make changes in the operation of the company, including a three-year monitoring of the system of internal reports and "pay equity" at the studio.
