Lies of P Engine Explained, Is It More Suited for Soulslike Genre?
Many players were able to take their first dive into the Victorian world of Lies of P. As the game resembles From Software titles in many ways, let's explore more technological side of it and find out what engine it uses.
Lies of P reimagines classical Pinocchio story in a dark, steampunk world. In its gameplay it strongly resembles Souls games, especially Bloodborne, which is also set in Victorian-like universe. While those titles are similar without a doubt, under the hood they are using different engines. This difference alone makes it quite interesting for more tech savvy fans. Let’s dive a bit deeper into what is being used to create Lies of P.
Lies of P engine
Lies of P uses 4th instalment of Unreal Engine, also known as UE4. This is a very safe decision from the developers’ side as the engine is on the market for almost 10 years now (UE4 was released on March 19th, 2014). This fact alone makes it easier for the creators to work with it, as they already could have built a lot of experience in using this tool.
Of course, we should remember that there is a newer version of UE - Unreal Engine 5. It was released in Early Access on May 26th, 2021, to be officially launched on April 5th, 2022. Let’s keep in mind though, that development process of a game is a lengthy one. Before UE5’s premiere for development studios, creators of Lies of P (Round8 Studio) were most likely already well into making the title.
Lies of P vs Soulsborne games - engine comparison
On the other hand, Souls titles, developed by From Software, are using their own, proprietary, engine. Even their latest game, Elden Ring, still uses heavily modified version of engine that was used for creating original Demon’s Souls released in 2009 on PS3. From Software has come through many iterations of soulslike titles that let them polish game mechanics, physics, and other aspects of the game nearly to perfection.
On the contrary, the creators of Lies of P have just taken their first steps into the genre. That may be the reason why the game feels less snappy and responsive according to some players.
