Many Marvel fans know that with great power comes great responsibility. As Marvel Rivals is drawing in hundreds of thousands of people daily, there is a good percentage of them that experience numerous technical issues in this game. Let the examples be DirectX 12 errors, loading screen being stuck, performance challenges, black screens, flickering, and finally connection problems. With that many challenges, hopefully NetEase will take responsibility to fix them. Adding salt to injury, however, there is yet another difficulty surfacing, as players are visiting their desktops more than often due to GPU crashes. In this article we will try to shed more light on this matter.

GPU crash in Marvel Rivals explained

Marvel Rivals is a generally praised title. Due to great number of similarities, it is often compared to Overwatch 2; by some players, it is even considered an upgrade to what its predecessor offers. However, it is not ideal. For many, MR is the main concern lately, as numerous fans experience problems. One of them is related to GPU crashes that happen every now and then. What causes it?

There are many possibilities and it’s hard to point to one specific culprit. Rather we have gathered some more plausible theories that can play a role in this issue:

  1. The first, and the most logical, explanation would be GPU drivers. This mostly affects Nvidia users, as many players started observing this problem after updating their graphics card drivers to the latest version. The obvious solution for this would be to revert to a previous iteration of them, yet the results vary as some fans claim that it worked, while others say it changed nothing.

If you have also started crashing after updating the drivers, you may want to consider using full cleanup tools like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), that completely wipes the graphics drivers, though be careful as you are doing it at your own risk!

  1. An interesting factor which can lead to crashes is the use of incorrect GPU while playing this game. This can only happen for people who use integrated and discrete graphic cards. One of the fans reports that in their case, the game was choosing the integrated GPU over the dedicated one. Make sure to select the correct one.
  2. Another thing that helped some of the affected players is disabling shader cache. It can be done from the level of Nvidia Control Panel (or its recently released app, which replaced GeForce Experience). You can try this solution by opening it, navigating to 3D Settings, then Global Settings and changing “Shader Cache Size” to “disabled”. Bear in mind that this can cause longer shader compilation.
  3. Other fans claim that in their case disabling overlays helped. It has also proven to be a cause of crashes in other games, so it’s worth a shot. Make sure to disable all of them, like Nvidia Overlay, Steam Overlay, MSI Afterburner, Steelseries GG, and others that can interfere. You can try enabling them one by one and testing to find the culprit.
  4. Next possible setting that can cause GPU crashes is Global Illumination and Relflection Quality option in the game menu. Disabling them is said to fix the problem, at least for some of the community members.

Wherever the problem is, let’s hope that NetEase will stand up to the challenge and solve issues plaguing this otherwise great title. The fact that Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play game can motivate devs to work on it, in order to keep players happy and invest their time (and money) in the game. Have fun and good luck!
