Hideo Kojima Fears the Death of Physical Media
Hideo Kojima is critical of the inevitable trend towards digitization of media. The death of physical media will not do us any good, he claims.
- Hideo Kojima took the opportunity to criticize the trend of digitalization of media;
- In his opinion, the death of physical media is inevitable and everyone will eventually regret it.
Hideo Kojima is deeply concerned about the ever-growing popularity of digital distribution. Taking the opportunity to buy the limited edition CD of "In Search of Hades" by Tangerine Dream the father of the Metal Gear series and founder of Kojima Productions was critical of the digitization of entertainment.
Kojima expressed the view that the death of physical media is inevitable and eventually, everything will be available digitally, but we will lose ownership of the things we paid for. The tipping point could be anything, a government initiative or an industry idea that pushes through to cut people off from ownership.
The second tweet continues the black vision of a world in which we will be denied free access to the books, music, and movies we love. That's why Kojima, whenever he has the opportunity, buys physical editions so that he can access them at any time.
While one may argue that digital distribution is convenient (and often cheaper), Kojima is quite right. This is most evident in the case of games and films, which jump between streaming platforms depending on who happens to acquire the distribution rights. In the case of popular works, it's not a big problem, but when niche productions are lost, we may never get them back, at least not in a legal way.
Do you agree with this view? Or do you think Kojima has gone into "old man shouting at the clouds" mode?
