Half-Life 2 RTX Improves More Than Just Lighting; Remaster Will Avoid Mistakes of Portal RTX
Thanks to an interview with the developers of Half-Life 2 RTX, we learned a number of more interesting things about this quasi-remaster of Valve's classic FPS.
This August studio Orbifold announced Half-Life 2 RTX, a refreshed version of the iconic FPS. The team is composed of four experienced modding teams. The developers just gave an interesting interview to the Lambda Generation channel, thanks to which we learned a lot of new stuff about the project.
- The authors' goal is to improve the game in such a way that it corresponds to the idealized image of the game that people who played it for the first time in 2004 hold today.
- The project follows the path blazed by Portal RTX. So the developers will not limit themselves to just adding ray tracing and will also improve all models and textures. The authors do not have to start from scratch, as they will take many of these elements from Half-Life: Alyx.
- These improvements may cause old mods with new objects to not always work properly right away in Half-Life 2 RTX, but the developers will provide tools to help update these outdated elements.
- The developers have the blessing of Valve, with Nvidia helping them with the work.
- The creators reassure that there is no reason to worry about performance. Portal RTX had problems with it, but the Half-Life 2 RTX team has people who developed the Portal: Prelude RTX mod, which, despite much larger levels than the basic game, was very well optimized.
Unfortunately, for now the creators are not ready to give a planned release date. It is worth adding that Half-Life 2 RTX will not be compatible with the Half-Life 2: VR mod, but the developers intend to convert improvements from the former to the latter project in the future, so that in some time it will be possible to play a beautified HL2 in virtual reality.
