GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS at launch says developer of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2
A former Rockstar Games employee commented on the potential optimization of GTA 6. He says the upcoming game won't run at 60 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be released this year and will certainly offer top-notch graphics, although the game probably won't look as good as it did in the first trailer from December 2023. The visual appeal of games is linked to their optimization, and a former Rockstar employee discussed how GTA 6 could perform at launch.
Mike York is the animator of previous installments of the popular gangster series. He recently participated in an interview conducted on the Kiwi Talkz channel on YouTube (the material was removed at York's request, but a trace of it remained on the Internet). The developer who worked on such titles as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, believes that GTA 6 won't get 60 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X (even more so on XSS) at launch.
I don't know if they'll [Rockstar] be able to pull off 60fps [in GTA 6]. I don't think so. I think they're gonna be shooting for 30fps – and a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that. They're gonna try to optimize as much as they can to where it never goes below 30.
Let's remind that GTA 6 will first be released exclusively on PS5 and XSX/S, and only later on PC. Mike York claims that the game will only provide 60 frames per second on personal computers. Let's recall that the situation was similar with Red Dead Redemption 2, released on PS4 and Xbox One, which we only experienced at 60 fps on PC. Rockstar didn't even bother to release a proper update after the PS5 and XSX launch.
Devs often choose to give players a choice in terms of how a particular title runs on consoles, allowing them to play according to their preferences (deciding between better performance and image quality). For example: The Next-Gen version of GTA 5 offers 3 modes, 2 of which aim for 60 fps. According to York, on day one GTA 6 won't be able to achieve such frame rate:
I don't think it'll get the 60fps raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don't think so. [...] But from my experience, they're [Rockstar] going to squeeze every little freaking thing they can out of GTA 6 and then optimize later for 60 frames because it's not as important as just making the game amazing at 30 frames.
Let's note that these are only assumptions by Mike York, who has not been working at Rockstar Games for many years and doesn't know how the development of GTA 6 is going. He often speaks about this game and since the release of its trailer, he maintains that the sixth installment will look as good as in the trailer.
