GTA 5 Remains a Gold Mine; Take-Two Interactive Plans New Games
Take-Two Interactive boasted the impressive sales results of Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Borderlands 3 and Mafia 3. It was also revealed that the publisher is planning 93 new games.
Take-Two Interactive has released a new financial report. Apart from dry numbers for revenues and profits, it contains a lot of interesting information about the results of individual games and the publisher's plans for the future.
Excellent results of GTA 5 and RDR 2. Mafia franchise important for Take-Two Interactive
- GTA 5: 130 million copies.
- RDR 2: 31 million.
- Borderlands 3: 10 million.
- Mafia III: 7 million.
- NBA 2K20: 12 million.
- The Outer Worlds: 2.5 million.
The sales of Grand Theft Auto V exceeded 130 million copies. As early as February this year, 120 million were reported. The increase of the result by another ten million in just a few months is an extremely impressive achievement, especially considering that the game will soon be celebrating its seventh birthday.
Other hits of the publisher are also doing great. Over 31 million copies of Red Dead Redemption 2 have already been sold (in February this year it was 29 million). In turn, Borderlands 3 exceeded 10 million copies. NBA 2K20 found 12 million buyers and The Outer Worlds - 2.5 million.
In addition, it has been reported that more than 7 million copies of Mafia III have been sold since its launch in 2016. The result does not match the achievements of Take-Two Interactive's greatest hits, but is sufficient for the publisher to consider the series an important brand. We can therefore expect that the refreshed versions will not be the end, and Mafia 4 will eventually be released.
Take-Two Interactive is planning 93 games. Kerbal Space Program 2 delayed
The publisher also revealed that it intends to release 93 games in the next five years. It was emphasized that they are independent titles, not expansions. Of this number, 63 will be for demanding players, 13 for casuals, and 17 will aim somewhere between the two groups.
72 games are designed for PCs, consoles or streaming platforms like the Stadia, and 21 are aimed exclusively for mobile devices. In terms of business models, 67 will make their debut as premium titles and the rest will be free-to-play.
Interestingly, out of these 93 games only 47 will belong to existing IPs. It is worth adding at the end that all these figures concern only the publisher's current plans. Some of these projects may be abandoned and others added.
The company also announced the delay of the planned release of Kerbal Space Program 2. The game will launch only in autumn 2021.
Very good financial results of Take-Two Interactive
The report also includes the financial results for the last quarter of the previous fiscal year, i.e. the period from January 1 to March 31, 2020. Revenue was $729.4 million, up 49% from the same three months in 2019. Net profit was USD 127.7 million.
In turn, the revenue for the entire fiscal year was 2.93 billion dollars. Of this amount, as much as 77% came from digital sources, both from game sales and microtransactions. Net profit amounted to 685.7 million dollars.
