GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 Unlikely to be Available This Year

The problems with availability of GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 will take much longer than everyone expected. Nvidia's boss revealed that the shortages in stores will last at least until the end of the year.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. The GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 cards are in great demand.
  2. If we didn't get one in the first batch, we may have a serious problem getting a new GPU this year.
  3. The limited availability is not due to supply problems, but to the shopping frenzy that the players have been experiencing.

If you were hoping that the availability of the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 GPUs would improve with the coming weeks, then Nvidia's boss Jensen Huang has dispelled all hopes. In his words, the interest is so great that the shortages will last at least until the end of this year.

"I believe that demand will outstrip all of our supply through the year. Remember, we're also going into the double-whammy. The double-whammy is the holiday season. Even before the holiday season, we were doing incredibly well, and then you add on top of it the ‘Ampere factor,’ and then you add on top of that the ‘Ampere holiday factor,’ and we're going to have a really really big Q4 season."

Jensen Huang admitted that factories have no problems with the production and simply demand exceeds supply.

"The 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue. The demand issue is that it is much much greater than we expected — and we expected really a lot.

Retailers will tell you they haven't seen a phenomenon like this in over a decade of computing. It hearkens back to the old days of Windows 95 and Pentium when people were just out of their minds to buy this stuff. So this is a phenomenon like we've not seen in a long time, and we just weren't prepared for it."

The last sentences spoken by Nvidia's boss are music to the ears of those who would like to make money from reselling GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. In short, the company can't make more cards than it is making right now.

"Even if we knew about all the demand, I don't think it's possible to have ramped that fast. We're ramping really, really hard. Yields are great, the product's shipping fantastically, it's just getting sold out instantly.

While Huang is not exaggerating, those who planned to switch to new generation of graphics cards this year can already verify their plans. However, if you have already sold the old card to cushion the cost of the new one, we can only feel sorry for you.
