Gamescom 2020 May Go Digital Rather Than be Canceled
After E3 2020 was canceled, the eyes of many players have turned to this year's gamescom. As it turns out, the German fair doesn't have to share the fate of the American „Gamer's Holiday”, as it will eventually take place in digital form.
- Gamescom 2020 will certainly not be canceled, as it will ultimately take place in digital form;
- Key decisions will be made after the "assessment of the situation" scheduled for mid-May;
- If it turns out then that the trade fair in its classic form can take place, changes will have to be made for the sake of the health of all participants.
In the face of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, the fate of this year's gamescom fair (to be held on August 22-24) has been called into question. However, as the German video game industry association - Game - and Koelnmesse (the fair and exhibition centre where the European "Gamers' Holiday" takes place every year) have reported, the event will not be completely canceled. As a last resort, gamescom 2020 will take place in digital form (via GamesIndustry.biz).
This was admitted by Felix Falk, who is the managing director of Game. Furthermore, he noted that although currently the people responsible for gamescom are working "at full speed" to develop the options associated with the organization of the fair in digital form, the event is already doing well on the Internet, boasting "millions of fans from around the world". The opening ceremonies, broadcast live, are particularly popular.
However, no specific decisions have been taken at present. We will have to wait for them until mid-May when the final assessment of the situation will be made. If it turns out that gamescom 2020 can take place in its classic form, changes will have to be made for the sake of the participants' health. Otherwise, all visitors and exhibitors will get refunds.
For a long time gamescom remained in the shadow of the E3 fair. Due to the fact that this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo has been canceled, even in its digital form it would still be probably the biggest (and best) "Gamer's Holiday" we can expect in the current situation.
