"Sixteen" is an important installment for the series for a simple reason - the game introduces many changes from the previous games, completely abandoning many small and large elements previously associated with the series. Such operations are always risky, but fortunately FF XVI turned out to be a successful experiment - although there are a few scratches on the glass.
Absolutely no complaints were caused by the combat system, as spectacular as it is complex. The final departure from turn-based battles may sadden the fans, but real-time skirmishes delighted even the biggest skeptics. Especially since the entire game - from the battles, through the cutscenes to the locations - looks superb, albeit very brutal by the standards of Final Fantasy in some places.
As for the plot, here the opinions were already somewhat divided. The story of the world of Valisthea drew in most reviewers, although there were indications that the narrative sometimes undermined the main message of Final Fantasy XVI.
More often, journalists pointed out "outdated" and "boring" side quests. At least in the beginning, because some reviewers noted that the optional missions become more interesting in the second half of the game. There are also mentions of the inventory and RPG systems, which, according to some people, were treated a bit lightly.
To sum up: Final Fantasy XVI is a very successful test of a new formula for the acclaimed jRPG series. Some veterans of the series will probably not like some of the changes, but even they should rather give the game a chance when they FF XVI debuts tomorrow on PlayStation 5. Or when it hits PCs, although for that we will have to wait a long time yet.
