Elden Ring Bests The Last of Us 2 to Win the Most Game of the Year Awards Ever
Elden Ring boasts the highest number of awards won for Game of the Year ever. Thus, FromSoftware's title beat The Last of Us 2.
Almost two years ago I wrote how The Last of Us: Part 2 had broken a record and amassed the most Game of the Year awards ever (ahead of The Witcher 3). Now that situation has changed and Naughty Dog's masterpiece has lost its crown. This is because it has been bested by Elden Ring.
If we look at the summary of this year's awards for game of the year, at this point editors from around the world have awarded 453 of them. Of course, this is not the final number of all awards given. The top three currently look as follows (via Game of the Year - Award Tracker):
- Elden Ring - 331
- God of War: Ragnarok - 78
- Immortality - 6
So it is clear that 2022 belonged to two games. This is not particularly shocking, since many major titles, such as Starfield or Hogwarts Legacy, suffere delays to 2023. Competition was decidedly less fierce as a result.
It is also worth noting here the enormous dominance of Elden Ring in this year's polls. Indeed, FromSoftware's game received more than 70% of all awards. In comparison The Last of Us 2 ultimately received 322 awards which accounted for 50% of the 2020 pool. So the difference is clearly visible. It should also be borne in mind that the number of awards given each year is different.
